what happened to spot or whiskers?

yesterday after church a sweet lady from our congregation gave us some beads and things for the girls and some items for our church nursery, including a large box of beanie babies. i was loading the girls up in my awesome red soccer mom minivan (that brought sexy back), and saw the box of beanie babies sitting in the garage. i thought the girls would enjoy having a couple to keep and play with on our short drive to the zoo.

the girls were trying to think of names for their beanie babies and i told them that they had tags on their ears that had names on them. lily handed me her animals and i read their names to her.

eva was all the way in the back of the minivan so i couldn't read hers for her. at first she just wanted to make up names for her animals.

here is where things get fun.

the first name she picks for her kitty was kony.  now, maybe in her mind she was thinking "coney" or something like that but in my mind all i could see was the name kony. now i'm wondering what exactly she learned in kindergarten this year. so i asked her what the name on it's tag said and she spelled c-a-n-y-o-n. so i told her it said canyon. she decided she liked that better than kony.

phew. crisis number one averted.

next she decided to sound out the name of her little doggy. and luckily for me (and the people of the internet) eva has learned some new reading skills from kindergarten. well, almost.

here is how our conversation went:

eva: my doggy's name is bitch! (rather proud of herself that she "read" the name on her own)

me: whaaaa?

eva: bitch, b-u-t-c-h. that's what it says on his tag.

me: (playing it cool) that's pronounced bUtch.

eva: oh, butch. well that's hard to say.

me: (divert, divert!!!) ummm...why don't we name it spot since it has a spot on his eye? (i can see this going south when she introduces her doggy to other people)

eva: yeah! i like that name...

me: (yes, another crisis averted. didn't want to explain that bitch is a bad word. isn't she supposed to learn that word at school and not on summer break with me? and isn't she supposed to learn about kony in like 10 years from now or something? or at least when she gets her own facebook account? )

eva: i think i'd rather call my doggy bitch. yeah i like bitch better.

me: it's bUtch! BUTCH!

eva: no, that's too hard to say, i want to call it bitch. i like bitch much better.

me: no, you can't call it bitch. that's not a nice word.

eva: okay fine. i'll call him butch.

me: (shaun is going to think i said this word in front of her. and that is just not true. besides that, it has more than four letters.  it's not my style.)

eva and her new doggy bitch BUTCH.
