today we have been married 13 years. wow. 13 years have gone by SO fast. seeing as how it's our anniversary, i think i will tell our "story". it's not romantic or too exciting, but it is our story.
we met in the youth group at church in oklahoma. we really started a friendship right before i turned 15 and shaun was almost 18. i really had a crush on shaun and for my 15th birthday he wrote me a song and recorded it on a tape. let's just say i had all the words memorized front and back, and still kind of do. during that same year (shaun's senior year of high school) he took me to his schools junior senior dance (similar to prom). i was so nervous and i'm sure shaun was too once he saw me walk out in this fuchsia colored number (yowza!).
shaun graduated high school and continued to come over to my house every day to hang out with me and my family (and eat dinner with us every night). i was very much "in love" with him. we continued to spend all of our spare time together. during shaun's second semester of college he moved to north carolina. we continued to write and call and i kept thinking about how much i liked him and wanted to marry him someday. even at the age of 16 i somehow knew that he was "the one". *** side note: if eva comes home at the age of 16 telling me she has met "the one" she can just forget it.
anyway, shaun moved back to oklahoma, and during my junior year of high school he got a job as a youth pastor (a young youth pastor!) in another town. during my junior year of high school i found out that i could graduate early because i
so the next may, after i turned 18 and shaun was a mere 21 years of age, we got married. it was the very best thing we have ever done. we both agree that we have had 13 awesome years. we cannot look back on one single year, month, or week that has been difficult between us. we are so thankful that God has been so gracious to us, especially since we got married so young.
here are a few fun facts about the spencers from the last 13 years:
- we have lived in 14 different places (this is somewhat embarrassing, but this is how we were brought up, by moving a lot)
- 11 of those places were in the first 7 years of marriage
- we have owned two houses, lived in 10 different apartments, rented one house, and lived with my mom for one month
- we have been through 10 different vehicles (including the ones we have now)
- shaun has worked 14 different various jobs (some part-time, some full-time)
- i worked 7 different jobs
- we have been on 3 vacations (colorado, cozumel, minnesota)
- we have had 5 pets: a fish named napolean, a dog named maggie, our first cat was murray (who is now in the big litter box in the sky, as shaun says), we also had a cat named milton who dissappeared, and charlie who currently resides with us
- after 9 years of being married eva was born and lily came after 12 years
- out of 13 years of marriage, at least on of us was in college for 11 of those years. we both went all the way through college, and shaun through seminary
- shaun weighs 10 lbs less now that when we got married (how many men can say that!)
- i was 18 with .0000001% body fat when we got married and i have had two children since so i will NEVER again weigh what i did when we got married
- we still love to hang out together and we are still best friends
Happy Anniversary!!! That is one awesome story! I didn't realize how long you had been married and how young you were! I'm sure you know that you've "beaten the odds", but I'm sure that you also know that it hasn't been under your own strength! God is good! I just realized how many "!" I've used!

Goodness, you were so young but these 13 years have proven that you knew what you were doing! And now you both are great parents to 2 of the cutest little girls we know. Happy 13th! We love you all!

I could not be more proud! Even more proud of your dedication to Jesus! I love you both dearly and wish you 113 years. And I love those two little girls!
ReplyDeleteLove, Mom
Mom still has that wedding pic in her living room! Congratulations on 13 years and two beautiful babies. It's seems to be a rare thing these days to find your soulmate and I'm so happy that you have yours (I consider myself in that group as well). Happy Anniversary!
ReplyDeleteHas it been 13 years! I am so proud of both of you and the testimony you live everyday for Christ. I love all of you so very much!

awesome, awesome post! I LOVED reading it and while I had heard parts of that story before, I've either forgotten it or not heard the whole thing at one time.
ReplyDeleteSo fun to learn all of those things about you...
but NOTHING can top the fun of seeing you in that fuscia dress!

how have I never seen that picture of you from that dance?!?! thank you for making my day by posting it!
ReplyDeleteI still remember meeting you guys and just could NOT believe you had already been married 7 years. I thought you were lying until I saw your wedding picture. I'm so glad we've gotten to be a part of nearly half of your married life! (for the record, you've known us for all but 3 months of ours, but since we lived in cambridge landing during that time, it's sort of like you WERE apart our lives!)
happy anniversary!!!
Happy, happy anniversary! I really loved reading your story! Great pics...you were a true vision in fuscia :)
ReplyDeleteAwe, sweet story. I remember when Shaun first told Darren and I that he'd "met someone". Then I remember about a minute later when he told us you were fifteen. : ) I remember the awkward stare between Darren and I that lasted for all of two seconds before Dareen launched into him and we spent the next year (who am I kidding? I'm STILL making fun of him!) ragging on him for some SERIOUS cradle robbing!
ReplyDeleteThen I remember your wedding and how Shaun slipped Boomer Sooner into the song he'd written for the wedding.
Btw, I remember that song he wrong to you too because I asked him to sing it at MY wedding! Still a great song!
I think the thing that really stands out for me was how much better looking you were/are than Shaun. Dude was a genius for nabbing you at such a young age while you were still feeling awkward and were completely unaware of how much better you could do! : )
Love you both. Happy Anniversary!
Happy Anniversary!!! Time has really gone by fast, but you 2 have proven that marriage is forever. Danielle, you have such a gift for blogging. My favorite part is where you talk about your ages and that if Eva comes home at 16 and tells you she has met "the one", she can forget it. I laughed so hard!
ReplyDeleteOne thing is for sure, even if you were young when it all started, you did not start or continue it alone, you have Jesus at the Head of your home and I know you will continue to keep Him there for all your lives.
You have been blessed with a great love and 2 beautiful little girls who are so lucky to have a mom and dad who love, honor, and respect each other and their Lord. You guys can be proud of the example you set and the start you are giving them in life.
Happy Happy Anniversary and many, many more.
Love
Aunt Kathy
